Europe's dormouse and bat species and the European flying squirrel (Pteromys volans) have suffered catastrophic declines over recent decades - with some expected to become extinct in Europe within 30 years if action is not taken now. Much of the habitat destruction that has caused this decline is for intensive agriculture - in collaboration with the team at Kleinwäscherei we look at how sustainable vegetarian food can help stop habitat destruction. Members of the public who've had contact with these species often become passionate about their conservation - but most people have no opportunity to learn about their existence - we aim to work in collaboration with artists to build alternative routes to science-based education to build awareness of these beautiful and endangered species. Through video we take people into the lives of families of dormice and through live chainsaw carving demonstrations we demonstrate how we're creating desperately needed nest holes for them with speed and precision.
